Behind the scenes at the filming of Witness
Lights, Camera, Healing: Filming Witness at Skidmore
We were honored to share our mission of supporting those impacted by the criminal justice system and addiction through movement and witnessing with @mdocs.skidmore and @skidmoredance
From the classroom to the stage, we spent the weekend exploring the deep intersections of art, incarceration, and embodiment.
Heartfelt gratitude to @sedipasquale (“Dancing for Success”), @livylalaz (“Embodied Storytelling”), and @martabrunner6 (“Libraries and Prisons”) for opening your classrooms to these vital conversations.
A big shoutout to the incredible film department, Adam Tinkle and Angela Beallor-Press, and the MDOCS student video production crew. Your professionalism and genuine interest created a focused, generous, and electric filming environment.
And to the audience who joined us in the Dance Theater for our multimedia performance, thank you for helping us amplify the voices of formerly and currently incarcerated individuals.
We weren’t trying to ‘present’ anything here, but build something together. There really was a dialogue that became a shared inquiry about art, incarceration, and embodiment. As creators, we fell in love with each other and that extended into the poetic performance. We plan to hold numerous screenings as soon as possible, and are working on venues that encompass the various counties we operate in. Please keep an eye out for upcoming invitations!
Eric and Sondra were invited to present a clip of Witness at Picture Lock One, a movie house in Troy and talk about our process. We all watched the film, The Work, shot in Folsom Prison and we inspired a lively question and response session.
